More than 19,000 residential areas across India have installed community rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, expanding the adoption of clean energy across housing societies and residential communities.
These installations have created cumulative rooftop solar capacity exceeding 278 MW and are benefiting more than 9 lakh households across the country.
Community rooftop solar systems are primarily being used to meet the electricity requirements of common facilities in residential complexes. These include lifts, common-area lighting, water pumps, security systems and sewage treatment plants.
The government has released around ₹422 crore in Central Financial Assistance to Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and group housing societies to support the adoption of rooftop solar.
Eligible projects can receive financial assistance of ₹18,000 per kW. Projects located in special-category states and Union Territories can receive higher assistance of ₹19,800 per kW.
Gujarat leads the country in community rooftop solar adoption, with more than 9,000 housing societies participating in the programme. Maharashtra follows with over 7,500 housing societies.
At the city level, Ahmedabad, Pune, Vadodara, Nashik and Surat are among the leading locations for rooftop solar adoption by residential societies.
Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to support rooftop solar installations in one crore homes by March 2027.
Overall rooftop solar installations under the programme have reached 47.8 lakh, representing around 16.8 GW of installed capacity and benefiting nearly 56.9 lakh families.
The growing participation of housing societies demonstrates the expanding role of community rooftop solar in India’s clean-energy transition, helping residential communities reduce electricity expenses for common facilities while increasing renewable power generation.
