China has temporarily paused approvals for new battery energy storage manufacturing projects as the rapidly expanding industry faces increasing pressure from excess production capacity, intense competition and falling prices.
According to sources cited by Cailianshe, projects that have not yet started construction will remain on hold for the time being. Battery storage manufacturing projects that are already under construction will not be affected by the measure.
The policy is temporary and could be revised in the future depending on market conditions and developments within the energy storage industry.
China’s battery energy storage sector has expanded rapidly alongside the country’s large-scale deployment of renewable energy. Growing solar and wind capacity has created significant demand for energy storage technologies that can help balance intermittent generation and strengthen grid reliability.
The sector has also attracted substantial investment from battery manufacturers, renewable energy companies and solar equipment producers. However, declining profitability and excess manufacturing capacity in the solar industry have encouraged several leading solar companies to diversify into battery energy storage.
This expansion has intensified competition among manufacturers and contributed to pressure on product prices and profit margins across the energy storage supply chain.
The latest move forms part of broader efforts by Chinese authorities to rationalise industrial capacity and promote more sustainable growth in clean-energy manufacturing sectors.
China has also introduced other measures affecting clean-energy manufacturing, including a consumption tax on lithium-ion batteries and solar cells.
The temporary approval pause indicates growing regulatory attention toward balancing manufacturing capacity with actual market demand. It could also influence future investment decisions and expansion strategies among companies operating in China’s battery storage sector.
As energy storage remains critical to the integration of renewable energy, China’s policy direction will be closely watched by global battery manufacturers, investors and renewable energy developers.
