The Positive Energy Dwelling in Sterksel, Netherlands, demonstrates how a modest residential building can function as a small power plant while maintaining a strong architectural identity.

Designed by Joris Verhoeven Architectuur, the house generates enough energy to meet its own heating and electricity requirements. Its energy production can also provide power for charging an electric vehicle, with surplus energy available to contribute towards the electricity needs of neighbouring homes.

Energy efficiency was treated as an integral part of the architecture rather than an addition to the completed design. Thick insulated walls give the house a robust and understated appearance, while the sharply defined roof creates a clean finish to the building's form.

The design responds closely to the Netherlands' variable climate. During winter, high levels of insulation help retain heat inside the building. In warmer periods, the same insulated envelope helps protect the interior from excessive external heat.

Designed Around the Sun

Solar orientation was a decisive factor in the design of the dwelling. Rooms requiring greater levels of natural light and warmth are positioned towards the sunnier sides of the house, maximising the benefits of daylight and passive solar heat.

At the same time, preventing overheating was an important consideration. Integrated solar blinds and screens help block excessive sunlight during warmer periods.

Solar blinds on the south and west elevations are intentionally incorporated into the architecture, while the terrace canopy follows the same visual proportions. These elements provide solar protection while contributing to the overall character of the building.

The requirement to create a zero-energy home therefore became an important architectural principle, influencing both the performance and aesthetics of the dwelling.

Zero-Energy Features

The house incorporates thick insulation and high-efficiency windows to minimise unwanted heat loss and heat gain.

A total of 44 south-oriented solar panels generate renewable electricity for the property.

An air-to-water heat pump provides hot water and supports underfloor heating. The system can also operate in cooling mode to provide floor cooling during warmer conditions.

Low-temperature heating helps maintain a comfortable and relatively consistent indoor climate while reducing overall energy requirements.

The dwelling also features balanced ventilation with heat recovery, helping provide fresh indoor air while recovering energy that would otherwise be lost through ventilation.

Integrated solar-control solutions include solar blinds in the west-facing kitchen and south-facing living room, along with a built-in screen for the south-facing bedroom.

Together, these technologies enable the Positive Energy Dwelling to combine renewable-energy generation, efficient climate control and passive architectural strategies within a contemporary residential design.
