Tripura has set a target of achieving 500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 as the state accelerates its transition towards cleaner and more sustainable sources of power.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the target while launching the Tripura Clean Energy Roadmap, Green Skilling programme and TREAT initiative. The state currently has around 58.76 MW of renewable energy capacity, highlighting the scale of expansion planned over the coming years.
Solar power is expected to play a major role in Tripura’s renewable energy growth. Nath highlighted its potential to support economic development, technological innovation, employment generation and long-term sustainable development.
The state is also focusing on developing skilled professionals for its expanding clean energy sector. Under the Unnayan through Transformative Solar Applications (UTSA) initiative, efforts will be made to create a trained workforce capable of supporting solar installations, operations and maintenance.
Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), together with the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission and Tripura State Electricity Corporation, is conducting specialised training programmes. These include Suryamitra and Solar PV Technician courses designed to build technical skills and employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
The clean energy initiatives are supported by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and are aligned with an Asian Development Bank-backed initiative.
Tripura is also expanding the implementation of major renewable energy programmes such as PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar. In addition to rooftop and agricultural solar projects, the state is exploring solar micro-grids, green hydrogen, battery energy storage, micro-hydel and biogas projects.
These initiatives are expected to strengthen clean energy access, improve energy security and create new employment opportunities while helping Tripura move towards its 500 MW renewable energy capacity target by 2030.
