Ultraviolette Plans $82 Million EV Plant in Tamil Nadu as Demand Surges

Indian electric motorcycle manufacturer Ultraviolette Automotive plans to invest ₹779 crore ($81.93 million) over the next five years to establish a new electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

The proposed facility will initially have an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles. Depending on future market demand, the plant will have the potential to double its capacity to 500,000 vehicles annually.

The new Hosur facility will complement Ultraviolette’s existing manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, which has the capacity to produce up to 50,000 vehicles per year. The expansion is aimed at supporting the company’s growing production requirements as demand for electric two-wheelers increases across India.

Electric two-wheeler adoption continues to gain momentum, supported by demand for cleaner mobility and lower running costs. Concerns surrounding older petrol vehicles and E20 fuel compatibility are also contributing to changing consumer preferences.

Government data indicates that electric two-wheeler sales crossed 1.03 million units during the first eight months of 2026, highlighting the continued expansion of India’s EV market.

Backed by Qualcomm and TVS Motor, Ultraviolette expects domestic demand for its scooters to reach at least 10,000 units per month. The additional manufacturing capacity is expected to help the company address this anticipated growth.

Ultraviolette plans to finance the ₹779 crore investment primarily through internal reserves, equity and future cash flows while maintaining limited dependence on debt.

International markets are also expected to become increasingly important for the company. Exports currently contribute around 15% of Ultraviolette’s sales, with the company expecting this share to increase to approximately 25% over the next five years.

The Hosur investment represents a significant expansion of Ultraviolette’s manufacturing footprint and comes as India’s electric two-wheeler market continues to scale up.
