GAIL Plans ₹3,294 Crore 600 MW Solar Project in Uttar Pradesh

GAIL (India) Limited has announced plans to develop a 600 MW greenfield solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant expansion of its renewable energy portfolio.

The project, with an estimated investment of ₹3,294.86 crore, was disclosed in a recent regulatory filing. It will include 600 MW of solar generation capacity along with a 550 MWh co-located battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to enhance grid reliability and ensure efficient power supply.

The integration of battery storage will enable better management of intermittent solar power by storing excess energy and supplying it during peak demand periods, thereby improving overall grid stability.

GAIL stated that the project is expected to be completed within 15 months from the award of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract. The investment will be financed through a mix of debt and equity.

Currently, GAIL operates around 29 MW of solar capacity at full utilisation. The proposed project represents a substantial scale-up of its clean energy footprint and reflects the company’s strategic shift toward sustainable energy solutions.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader clean energy goals, including expanding non-fossil fuel capacity, reducing carbon emissions, and strengthening power infrastructure with advanced energy storage solutions.

With this move, GAIL joins other public sector undertakings in accelerating investments in renewable energy, contributing to the country’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
