The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has extended the deadline for mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards certification of solar photovoltaic inverters with capacities above 200 kW to December 31, 2026.

The previous deadline was June 30. According to a notification issued on July 3, manufacturers can continue supplying high-capacity and utility-scale solar inverters under the existing self-certification mechanism until the revised deadline or until further orders are issued.

The extension has been granted due to the limited availability of accredited testing facilities capable of testing large solar inverters in accordance with the applicable Indian standards.

To qualify under the self-certification mechanism, manufacturers must hold valid International Electrotechnical Commission certificates that comply with the prescribed Indian standards. They must also obtain the required test reports from recognised and accredited laboratories.

The decision is expected to prevent supply-chain disruptions and delays in large-scale solar power projects. It will allow manufacturers additional time to complete the BIS testing and certification process without interrupting the supply of essential equipment.

The extension will also support the continued expansion of India’s renewable energy sector by ensuring that ongoing utility-scale solar installations are not delayed due to insufficient testing infrastructure.
