GPS Renewables Wins EPC Contract for India’s First Ethanol-to-Jet SAF Plant

GPS Renewables has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from NTPC Ltd to develop India’s first ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Andhra Pradesh, marking a major milestone in the country’s low-carbon aviation transition.

The project will be established at the green hydrogen hub of NTPC Green Energy Limited in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, and is designed to produce 1,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) of sustainable aviation fuel.

The facility will convert ethanol derived from CO₂ into aviation fuel through a multi-stage process involving ethanol-to-ethylene conversion, olefins oligomerisation, and hydroprocessing. The plant will also produce renewable diesel as a by-product, contributing to cleaner fuel alternatives for the transportation sector.

Technology licensing and basic engineering for the ETJ process will be provided by Lummus Technology, while Xytel India will undertake detailed engineering responsibilities. GPS Renewables will lead end-to-end project execution, covering procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational management.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2029 and represents a significant step in India’s strategy to decarbonise aviation and scale up sustainable fuel production. It also aligns with the broader push toward alternative fuels and green hydrogen ecosystems to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support climate goals.
