Green Hydrogen Blending Can Reduce Fuel Imports, Says Prahlad Joshi

National:
Green hydrogen blending is emerging as a key strategy to reduce India’s dependence on imported fuels and strengthen energy security, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Prahlad Joshi, said on Monday.

Speaking at an agreement-signing event for green ammonia developers and buyers under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), Joshi highlighted that pilot projects have already demonstrated the technical feasibility of hydrogen blending in city gas distribution and mobility sectors.

“Wherever possible, if green hydrogen is blended, it can reduce the import of fuel,” he stated, emphasizing the potential of the approach to lower reliance on external energy sources.

He pointed out that the fertiliser sector has already showcased the effectiveness of this model, supported by existing demand and infrastructure, resulting in immediate and measurable impact.

Joshi further stressed that India is adopting a coordinated and integrated approach rather than isolated clean energy initiatives. The strategy involves combining multiple solutions, including green hydrogen and green ammonia, to build domestic capabilities and reduce import dependence.

Highlighting the global context, the minister noted that energy security and resilient supply chains have become increasingly critical, particularly for sectors dependent on imported natural gas and ammonia.

Green hydrogen and green ammonia, he added, are central to India’s vision of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) and long-term sustainable energy development.

The statement reinforces India’s commitment to accelerating its clean energy transition while strengthening its position in the global green hydrogen ecosystem.
