Gujarat has emerged as India’s leading state in renewable energy capacity, overtaking Rajasthan with a total installed renewable energy capacity of 47,178 MW, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The state added nearly 13,785 MW of renewable energy capacity over the past year, enabling it to edge past Rajasthan, which currently stands at 47,020 MW. This milestone highlights Gujarat’s rapid expansion in clean energy infrastructure and its growing importance in India’s renewable energy transition.
Gujarat’s renewable energy portfolio is primarily driven by solar and wind power. Solar energy contributes 29,303 MW to the state’s total capacity, while wind energy accounts for 15,642 MW. The remaining capacity comes from hydroelectric and bio-power projects, creating a diversified clean energy mix.
Shalini Agarwal, Managing Director of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd, described the achievement as a major milestone, noting that the state has already reached 47 GW of its ambitious 100 GW renewable energy target set for 2030.
She emphasised that renewable energy expansion has played a critical role in reducing the impact of global energy market disruptions and improving energy security. Gujarat is now shifting its focus towards battery energy storage systems (BESS) to strengthen grid reliability and manage renewable intermittency.
The state has also maintained its leadership position in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, reinforcing its dominance in decentralised solar adoption.
Industry leaders, including the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, credited sustained investment, policy support, and a strong industrial ecosystem for driving Gujarat’s rise, positioning the state at the forefront of India’s clean energy future.
