India’s Solar Boom Could Position Country as Renewable Export Hub: Renewables Norway

India’s rapidly expanding solar industry could evolve into a major global manufacturing and export hub, particularly for European markets, according to Renewables Norway. The organisation believes India has the potential to strengthen its position in the global clean energy supply chain by expanding manufacturing capabilities across the entire solar value chain, from rare earth materials and wafers to solar cells and finished modules.

Bard Vegar Solhjell, CEO of Renewables Norway (Fornybar Norge), highlighted India’s emergence as the world’s third-largest renewable energy developer and described the country as a key contributor to the global energy transition. He noted that increasing domestic manufacturing capacity would enable India to meet growing international demand while reducing dependence on existing supply chains.

During a recent Norwegian business delegation visit to India, discussions with government ministries and energy stakeholders focused on strengthening cooperation in renewable energy, battery storage, transmission infrastructure and energy security. Industry leaders also identified offshore wind and pumped hydro storage as promising areas for collaboration, leveraging Norway’s expertise in hydropower and clean energy technologies.

May-Elin Stener added that Norwegian companies specialising in advanced renewable energy solutions are keen to expand their presence in India through partnerships with local businesses. The growing collaboration reflects increasing bilateral efforts to accelerate sustainable energy development while supporting India's ambitions to become a global clean energy manufacturing and export powerhouse.
