From Imports to Independence — India Builds a 165 GW Solar Manufacturing Ecosystem

India’s clean energy transition is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, powered by strong policy support and strategic investments under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency solar PV modules. According to data presented in the Lok Sabha (October 2025), the PLI initiative has already generated 43,000 jobs, including 11,220 direct jobs, across nine states—highlighting its transformative impact on domestic manufacturing.

Gujarat leads the country with over 22,400 jobs, supported by major players like Reliance Industries and Adani New Industries. Tamil Nadu follows with nearly 6,800 jobs, while Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and others continue to strengthen India’s renewable energy corridor through large-scale integrated manufacturing facilities.

With a substantial ₹24,000 crore outlay, the PLI scheme has awarded 48.3 GW of integrated and partially integrated module manufacturing capacity. As a result, India’s installed solar module capacity has risen to 121.68 GW, although imports worth $386 million in FY26 indicate ongoing reliance on foreign suppliers.

However, this dependence is expected to fall sharply. Supported by policies like the Approved List of Models & Manufacturers (ALMM), Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on modules and cells, and the expanding PLI program, ICRA projects India’s solar module manufacturing capacity to cross 165 GW by March 2027. This growth will not only strengthen India’s domestic supply chain but also significantly reduce reliance on China—marking a decisive shift from imports to energy independence.

India is now positioned to emerge as a global solar manufacturing powerhouse, reshaping both national energy security and the broader clean energy economy.
