Kanpur Shines as Solar Hub with 64 MW Rooftop Capacity

Kanpur has emerged as a key contributor to Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy expansion, achieving nearly 64 MW of rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. With 20,756 rooftop solar systems installed, the district currently ranks third in the state, according to data released by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA).

Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister AK Sharma congratulated the residents of Kanpur for actively embracing clean energy solutions and supporting the state’s transition towards sustainable power. Experts estimate that the installed rooftop solar capacity generates close to 96 million units of electricity annually, helping significantly reduce electricity bills for consumers and lower dependence on conventional energy sources.

The solar generation also delivers substantial environmental benefits, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 80,000 tonnes each year. This reduction is equivalent to the positive environmental impact of planting approximately 35 lakh trees, highlighting the scheme’s role in advancing climate-friendly urban development.

Since the launch of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana in February 2024, rooftop solar adoption in Kanpur has maintained strong momentum, with an average of 80–90 new systems being installed daily across individual homes, housing societies and common facilities. Officials attributed the rapid uptake to attractive government subsidies and the availability of low-interest loans, which have made rooftop solar more accessible to households.
