Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, reviewed the progress of flagship renewable energy initiatives in India’s North East during the Regional Workshop on Renewable Energy held in Guwahati. He urged the states to expedite implementation of schemes such as PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM to unlock the region’s vast renewable energy potential of 122 GW, of which only 5.1 GW has been harnessed so far.
Joshi announced that the MNRE will soon unveil a new Small Hydro Policy, specifically designed to leverage the hilly terrain and abundant water resources of the North Eastern states. The policy aims to promote localised clean energy generation, create green jobs, and enhance energy security in the region.
The Minister praised Assam for introducing its Integrated Clean Energy Policy, and recognised Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Mizoram for their outstanding implementation of MNRE programs.
Key discussions at the workshop also covered Green Hydrogen, decentralised renewables, and innovative financing models, reflecting the government’s commitment to transform the North East into “Urja-Lakshmi” — a symbol of clean, sustainable, and inclusive prosperity.
