NTPC Arm Commissions 250 MW Unit of Tehri Pumped Storage Project

NTPC Ltd has announced that its subsidiary, THDC India Ltd, has successfully commissioned Unit IV (250 MW) of the Tehri Pumped Storage Project, marking a significant step in expanding India’s energy storage infrastructure.

The unit achieved commercial operation from 00:00 hours on April 12, 2026, following successful commissioning and necessary regulatory approvals. This development is part of the larger 1,000 MW (4×250 MW) Tehri pumped storage project.

With the commissioning of this fourth unit, an additional 250 MW capacity has been brought into commercial operation, strengthening India’s pumped storage capabilities, which play a crucial role in balancing renewable energy supply and ensuring grid stability.

NTPC stated that this addition has increased the group’s total installed capacity to 89,378 MW, while its commercial capacity has reached 88,298 MW. Meanwhile, THDC India Ltd’s total installed and commercial capacity now stands at 3,907 MW.

The NTPC Group is aggressively expanding its footprint in the energy storage segment, with pumped storage projects aggregating around 20 GW under development across the country. The company aims to commission 3–5 GW of pumped storage capacity by FY2031–32.

Pumped storage projects are critical for integrating intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the grid, helping store excess power and release it during peak demand periods.

The commissioning of the Tehri unit underscores NTPC’s commitment to supporting India’s clean energy transition while enhancing grid reliability and energy security.
