Narendra Modi is set to undertake a week-long visit to Europe in May, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic, economic, and energy partnerships amid growing global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.
The tour, expected to begin around May 18, will focus on deepening cooperation in trade, investment, defence, energy, innovation, and climate action with key European partners. The visit comes at a time when global supply chains and energy security remain under pressure due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia.
Prime Minister Modi will begin his European tour in Norway, where he will attend the India-Nordic Summit in Oslo alongside leaders from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. Discussions at the summit are expected to centre on green energy, climate action, innovation, digitalisation, blue economy initiatives, and Arctic cooperation. Norway’s role in energy security and sustainable development makes it a significant strategic partner for India.
The Prime Minister will then travel to the Netherlands, where bilateral discussions are expected to focus on water management, agriculture, technology partnerships, and semiconductor cooperation. The Netherlands remains a key economic partner for India, with significant bilateral investments and growing collaboration in advanced technologies.
The Europe tour will also include Modi’s first standalone bilateral visit to Italy, where he is expected to hold talks with Giorgia Meloni. Key agenda items include defence cooperation, energy partnerships, trade expansion, and the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a strategic connectivity initiative aimed at boosting regional trade and logistics integration.
A possible stop at Vatican City is also under consideration, where Modi may meet Pope Francis as part of broader diplomatic outreach.
Following the Europe tour, Modi is also scheduled to visit France in mid-June to participate in the G7 Outreach Summit, continuing India’s active engagement with major global economic and geopolitical forums.
The visit highlights India’s growing strategic importance in Europe and reinforces efforts to build resilient partnerships across trade, energy security, critical technologies, and sustainable development.
