Uttar Pradesh has emerged as India’s top-performing state in rooftop solar adoption, recording a historic 52,729 installations in March under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
This marks the highest monthly rooftop solar installation achieved by any state since the scheme’s launch, highlighting the rapid scale-up of distributed renewable energy in the state.
With cumulative installations crossing 4.48 lakh units and total installed capacity reaching 1,524.61 MW, Uttar Pradesh currently ranks third nationally, with strong momentum to climb higher in the coming months.
The scheme has delivered substantial benefits to households, including:
Officials estimate that rooftop solar systems in the state generate 68–70 lakh units of electricity daily, significantly reducing dependency on conventional grid power and lowering overall energy costs.
Beyond environmental and financial gains, the initiative has also contributed to employment generation, creating approximately 65,000 direct jobs and over one lakh indirect jobs across the solar value chain.
The programme has been effectively implemented by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), and is increasingly being seen as a scalable model for other states to accelerate rooftop solar adoption.
The success of the PM Surya Ghar scheme in Uttar Pradesh underscores its role in advancing clean energy access, economic savings, and energy independence at the household level.
