India’s Green Hydrogen Capacity Touches 8,000 TPA Under National Mission

Government eyes 5 MMT annual output by 2030 to make India a global hydrogen hub.

India has commissioned around 8,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen production capacity as of February 2026 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023. This was informed by Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, in the Rajya Sabha.

The country has set an ambitious target of achieving 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen production annually by 2030, aiming to position itself as a global hub for production, consumption, and exports of green hydrogen.

According to the minister, ₹700 crore has been allocated under the mission so far, out of which ₹250.12 crore has already been utilised. In the financial year 2025–26 alone, ₹203.75 crore has been spent from an allocation of ₹300 crore, reflecting accelerated progress in the sector.

Competitive bidding under the mission has led to the discovery of green hydrogen supply prices in the range of ₹387–397 per kg. Key public sector refiners, including Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, are among the primary participants in these developments.

A report by the World Bank Group highlights that renewable energy accounts for 50–70% of green hydrogen production costs, emphasizing the importance of affordable clean energy in scaling up production.

With strong policy support, growing investments, and competitive pricing, India is steadily advancing towards establishing itself as a key player in the global green hydrogen ecosystem.
