The Centre is planning to launch the Sampoorn Gobardhan Scheme on August 10, 2026, coinciding with World Biofuel Day, to accelerate compressed biogas production across India.

The proposed scheme is expected to provide higher assured procurement prices for compressed biogas and enhanced capital subsidies for new projects. These measures aim to improve project viability, provide greater demand certainty and attract fresh investment into the sector.

The initiative seeks to address implementation challenges experienced under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation programme. Despite more than 1,094 letters of intent being issued under SATAT, only 219 compressed biogas plants are currently operational.

Government officials expect the proposed support framework to facilitate the establishment of approximately 600–700 additional CBG plants within the next year.

The scheme is particularly significant as mandatory blending requirements for compressed biogas with compressed natural gas and piped natural gas continue to increase. The blending target has risen to 3% for 2026–27 and is scheduled to reach 5% from 2028–29 onwards.

Investments planned by major companies, including Reliance Industries, Adani TotalEnergies and Suzuki Motor Corporation, are also expected to strengthen domestic biogas production.

By improving procurement certainty, financial support and market demand, the proposed scheme aims to expand India’s waste-to-energy ecosystem, reduce dependence on imported natural gas and support the country’s clean energy transition.
