Researchers from Nagpur University and Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University have secured a UK patent for an innovative system designed to enable solar panels to generate electricity during nighttime and low-light conditions.
The technology was developed by Dr. Sanjay Dhoble and Professor Vijay Pawade. It combines bifacial solar panels with LED light sources positioned on both sides of the panels.
During daylight hours, the bifacial panels generate electricity using sunlight, while surplus electricity produced through wind energy is stored for later use.
At night or when natural light levels fall, an integrated sensor automatically activates the LED sources using the stored energy. The artificial light illuminates both sides of the bifacial panels, allowing them to continue producing electricity.
According to the researchers, the system could generate approximately 40% of its daytime electricity output during nighttime without relying on an external power supply.
Commercial deployment, efficiency validation and detailed cost analysis are still under consideration. However, the patented technology could potentially support residential buildings, industrial facilities and street-lighting infrastructure.
The innovation aims to improve round-the-clock renewable power availability while promoting the integration of solar, wind and energy-storage technologies.
