India Emerges as Trusted Global Supplier of Green Fuels with Landmark Japan Agreements

India is strengthening its position as a trusted global supplier of green fuels, supported by the growing commercial maturity of its green hydrogen ecosystem and landmark long-term export agreements with leading Japanese companies. According to Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Indian-produced green fuels are becoming an integral part of international green hydrogen and green ammonia supply chains.

The latest agreements involve ACME Group and Japanese corporations IHI Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, marking a significant milestone in India's clean energy export ambitions. Under the agreement with IHI Corporation, ACME will supply 405,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. The project is backed by Japan's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme administered by the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), providing long-term commercial support for low-carbon fuel imports.

In a separate agreement, ACME has signed a 10-year contract with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company to supply 100,000 tonnes of green methanol annually from its Paradip facility in Odisha. The partnership further strengthens India's role in supplying sustainable fuels for industrial decarbonisation and international clean energy markets.

Japanese officials highlighted that India's green hydrogen and green ammonia have emerged as globally cost-competitive solutions capable of supporting the country's long-term decarbonisation goals. The agreements also reinforce growing energy cooperation between India and Japan as both nations accelerate their transition towards low-carbon economies.

The developments align closely with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to establish the country as a leading global hub for the production, consumption and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. With large-scale commercial agreements now materialising, India's green fuel industry is entering a new phase of global competitiveness and export-led growth.
